About Page

For my About Page, I decided to ask myself some questions and answer them which I am calling, “Questions for the Writer by The Writer.”

How would you describe your writing?

I would describe my writing as a work in progress. I think my ideas are good, and I am always trying to improve. But my writing is interesting(so I have been told) and unconscious. I have a hard time trying to figure out how to make my writing more conscious. What I mean by that is that I am never sure why I am writing something the way I am, and I want to become more aware of the why.

How would you describe your freelance writing?

When it comes to dealing with clients, I try to be respectful of their time ,and I hope they are respectful with mine. I ask questions and listen to what the client wants. I meet deadlines and take criticism well meaning if you send it back for rewrites, I get to work and don’t complain.

I like doing research, so that does not scare me. I have, I think, a conversational style of writing but I can adapt my tone and voice, if necessary.

What do you like about writing romance novels?

I discovered romance novels at twelve and reading them help save me and was my gateway to reading classic literature, mysteries, biographies, poetry, and essays. I still like romance novels because they are my first love. I think a  good romance novelist can take a familiar trope and make it feel like new.

Who are your favorite writers?

I like classic literature. So, the tried-and-true Jane Austen, D.H. Lawrence, and Henry James because they deal with love, but maybe not so much Henry James. For today, I am really loving Cat Sebastian. She does these emotional m/m historical romance novels and Pepper Basham who write Christian romance novels.

What are your favorite cooking shows?

I still like America’s Test Kitchen and Milk Street Television on PBS. I don’t have cable so for my cooking show fix I stick with PBS.

What is your favorite meal?

Well, I remember around Thanksgiving my grandmother made collard greens, cornbread stuffing, sweet potato pie, and mashed potatoes. I can either take or leave turkey, but the rest was divine. I also love Ocean Spray canned and jellied cranberry sauce.

What is the hardest part about being a writer?

It is a thankless job for the most part. I am also a freelance writer, and waiting until someone gets back to you is one of  the hardest parts of being one.  I could mention a hundred things that are hard about being a writer but still I do it because I love to write whether it is a fiction or freelance writer.

What is the best part about being a writer?

The flexibility in your schedule. Also, the amazement of taking a blank page and filling it up with characters and an actual story. The same is true as a freelance writer but with an article or blog post. Both take research, being detail oriented, and a lot of rewrites.

Name three things’ people need to know about me.

I really like potato chips.  I have never been in love. I am trying to cut back on sugar.

What are you working on?

I was working on my novel “What I learned While Reading Romance Novels.” I put it aside to work on something else. Wish me luck with it. Also, some essays, short stories, and my blog posts.

Do you know any good jokes?

I know one. A Rabbi, minister, and priest walks into a bar. The bartender looks at them and says, “Is this a joke.”
